Fantasy and Story Telling

Once upon a time, oral story telling ruled. It was the medium through which people learned their history, settled their arguments and came to make sense of the phenomena of their world. School children at the feet of a story teller, sat mesmerized and remembered the stories till the teller come again. Everyone who can speak can tell stories. Story is the best vehicle for passing in factual information. Children at any level of schooling who do not feel as component as their peers in reading or writing are often masterful at story telling. Here, I would like to share one of the memorable experience of my story telling to you all.
A little girl Priyanshi who was studying in my class (K-2) suddenly became quiet and stopped participating in activities. After few days a worried mother came to me and share about priyanshi’s behaviour. The reason of her changed behaviour was little younger child who entered in their family few months back. Mother asked for the help and I got the reason. I felt that Priyanshi must be feeling neglected from her parents. She was unable to understand her role. Rather giving a lecture on it, I organized a story session in my class where I took a puppet story of a family in which I made them understand how each family member is important. I talked about each member’s role and responsibilities. When the story was over I held a discussion on it. Children shared their views and opinions about their families. Priyanshi was thinking deeply. I thought I have passed the message which I wanted to give it to priyanshi.
After few days happy mother came to me and praised Priyanshi for her wonderful contribution in family. She has now started taking care of the little one. I felt, now my story got ‘THE END’. Love you Priyanshi!!
Fantasy helps the child to deal with emotions and to adjust in various situations. There is no better way of presenting material of imagination than telling a story.
